AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

The Planning Department is affiliated with the Department of Engineering and is located on the first floor of City Hall. Under the administration of the Interim Director of Planning and Recreation, the Planning staff is comprised of one full-time planner nationally certified through the American Institute of Certified Planners, a full-time Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) administrator, and a half-time departmental aide.

The department's mission is to plan, stimulate and guide development activity in the City's residential, commercial, and industrial sectors using sound planning methods that are cost-effective to the community. The department is also actively involved in preserving and protecting Monroe's historic resources, promoting its heritage, and developing plans for future management and interpretation of selected sites. To accomplish these goals, the department applies a team approach to projects capitalizing on each member's area or areas of specialization and expertise, which include historic preservation, land use, economic and community development, housing, cultural resource management, and grant writing and administration.

The department currently provides staffing to the Citizen Planning Commission, the Historic District Commission, the Economic Development Review Committee, the Historic District Study Committee, the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, and the Community and Economic Development Revolving Loan Board. These assignments, along with current projects, reflect the diversity, education, and level of professional training that has been the hallmark of the city's Planning Department since its inception.
